Väla Centrum
Väla Centrum – fifty years of shopping, experiences and visions for the future
Welcome to Väla Centrum – one of the Nordic region’s largest and most appreciated shopping areas, just outside Helsingborg. Here, shopping, restaurants, design and experiences come together in a modern environment that attracts millions of visitors every year.
From bold idea to Swedish shopping classic
When Väla opened on March 13, 1974, it was Sweden’s largest shopping center – and something entirely new for its time. Many were skeptical about building a large retail center outside the city center, but the investment quickly proved to be a success. With the new motorway opening the following year, Väla became easily accessible and visitors flocked there.
Right from the start, there were popular stores such as H&M and Polarn O. Pyret, and in the middle of the square stood a pond with goldfish as well as the artwork by Bertil Vallien – a detail that is still part of Väla’s history.
A shopping destination across generations
During the 1980s, Väla grew significantly and became Helsingborg’s largest workplace. New specialty stores and trendy brands made the center an obvious excursion destination in southern Sweden. When IKEA opened next door in 1987, the area was further strengthened as one of Sweden’s most important retail locations.
In the 1990s, an extensive redevelopment made Väla more modern than ever. New shopping streets, longer opening hours and a broader fashion offering attracted more visitors, and after the reopening in 1996, the number of guests rose to around five million per year.
Sweden’s best shopping center
During the 2000s, Väla developed from a traditional shopping center into an exclusive shopping mall with a focus on fashion, design and experiences. New entrances, restaurants and more than one hundred stores created a modern meeting place where shopping was combined with events, fashion shows and family activities.
In 2011, yet another major expansion was inaugurated, inspired by Swedish nature and light. The spectacular design with large glass domes and open spaces gave Väla an entirely new expression. At the same time, the range of restaurants and the store mix grew to more than 180 stores.
Sustainability and experiences in focus
Today, Väla is known not only for shopping but also for its sustainability efforts and events. Solar panels on the roofs produce its own energy, and sustainability projects have been an important part of the development since the 2010s.
The center has also become a venue for concerts, fashion shows and major family events. Festivals such as Pink Party and the popular Väla Fashion Show have attracted both Swedish artists and thousands of visitors.
One of the Nordic region’s largest retail areas
With more than 200 stores, restaurants, cafés, big-box retail and a large IKEA store, Väla is today a complete shopping destination for the whole family. The area offers everything from international fashion chains to home furnishings, technology and local favorites.
In addition, Väla has several times been named Sweden’s most popular shopping center – both by customers and tenants.
The Väla of the future
Development continues. With the “Vision Väla” project, new experiences, restaurants, activities and a unique walking path around the area are being planned. The future visions include everything from innovative meeting places to a ski tunnel on the roof for year-round skiing.
Väla is more than shopping – it is a destination where history, the future and experiences meet. Whether you want to shop, enjoy good food or simply take in the atmosphere, Väla is an obvious stop when you visit Helsingborg.
