The Midnight Sun
At midnight in the high Arctic, the usual architecture of the day disappears. The sun approaches the horizon but refuses to cross it. Instead, it moves sideways across the northern sky, beginning another ascent without the darkness that normally separates one day from the next.
This is the midnight sun: continuous daylight during the polar summer, when the sun remains above the horizon for 24 hours or more. It occurs within the Arctic and Antarctic polar regions and becomes progressively more prolonged toward the poles.
Why the sun does not set
The phenomenon is a consequence of Earth's geometry rather than anything unusual happening to the sun. Earth's rotational axis is tilted by roughly 23.4 degrees relative to the plane of its orbit. As Earth travels around the sun, each hemisphere therefore spends part of the year inclined toward it.
During northern summer, the North Pole is tilted toward the sun. At sufficiently high latitudes, Earth's daily rotation no longer carries an observer completely into the planet's shadow. The sun may descend toward the horizon during the local night, but it remains above it.
The Arctic Circle, currently near 66°34′ north, approximately marks the southern limit at which continuous daylight can occur around the June solstice. The equivalent phenomenon takes place south of the Antarctic Circle during the Southern Hemisphere's summer.
The farther poleward one travels, the longer the period becomes. Close to the Arctic Circle, continuous sunlight lasts only around the solstice. Farther north it persists for weeks or months. At the geographic North Pole, the pattern reaches its extreme: broadly speaking, the sun remains above the horizon throughout the polar summer, circling the sky rather than following the familiar daily pattern of rising in the east and setting in the west.
Where to experience it
The midnight sun belongs to a vast circumpolar landscape rather than to a single country. It occurs in northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Alaska, Canada and Greenland, as well as parts of the high-latitude North Atlantic region.
Northern Norway provides some particularly accessible examples. Current Norwegian visitor information gives approximate periods of continuous sun as:

These dates illustrate the fundamental geographical rule: the farther north you go, the longer the sun stays above the horizon.
Svalbard, between mainland Norway and the North Pole, therefore experiences something fundamentally different from an ordinary northern European summer. For roughly four months, sunset disappears altogether.
A landscape without conventional night
Continuous daylight does not mean that the Arctic landscape looks the same throughout the 24-hour cycle.
Around local midnight, the sun is generally at its lowest elevation. At many locations it travels close to the horizon, producing long shadows and low-angle illumination. Mountains, coastlines, tundra and water can consequently retain the directional light normally associated with evening even though darkness never arrives.
Weather and topography complicate the experience. A mountain can conceal a geometrically visible sun, while clouds can eliminate direct sunlight entirely. And immediately south of the zone of true midnight sun, summer nights can remain remarkably bright because the sun passes only a short distance beneath the horizon.
The result is a gradual transition rather than an abrupt boundary between ordinary summer nights and the polar day.
The other half of the Arctic year
The midnight sun is only one side of a much larger seasonal transformation.
As Earth continues around its orbit, the Northern Hemisphere begins tilting away from the sun. Days shorten rapidly at high latitudes. Eventually the process reverses: places that experienced continuous summer daylight enter the season of polar night, when the sun remains below the horizon for at least 24 hours.
At the North Pole the contrast is at its most pronounced. The sun rises around the March equinox and does not set again until around the September equinox. It then remains below the horizon through the northern winter.
This enormous swing between light and darkness is one of the defining environmental rhythms of the polar regions. It influences ecosystems as well as human life, shaping biological activity, seasonal movement and the annual patterns of communities that have inhabited northern landscapes for generations.
It also explains why the midnight sun and the northern lights, although both associated with the Arctic, are essentially seasonal opposites for travellers. Auroras can occur physically at any time, but the bright Arctic summer sky prevents them from being visible. Darkness must return before the aurora can readily be seen.
More than a spectacle
The midnight sun is often described as an Arctic curiosity, but it is better understood as part of the basic physical character of the polar world.
Latitude and Earth's axial tilt reorganize time itself here. The familiar sequence of morning, afternoon, evening and night becomes less useful when daylight continues across midnight. Farther north, sunrise and sunset cease to be daily events and become markers in an annual cycle.
That is what makes the phenomenon so distinctive. The sun has not stopped moving, and Earth has not stopped turning. Instead, travelling into the high latitudes reveals something that temperate regions usually conceal: day and night are products not simply of the clock, but of planetary geometry and our position on Earth.
