Smörtaxen makes dinner the evening’s main event: a set menu, drinks and loud music, with at least four and a half hours to settle into it all. Old-school hip-hop and disco set the tone, and conversation is encouraged to rise with the volume. Come for a sociable night built around food rather than a quick meal or a quiet table.
A garage with a second life
The restaurant occupies a garage built in 1931, transformed into a small dining room by Elin and Sebastian Swärd and chef Simon Tollesson, who previously worked at Vollmers. The founders furnished it partly with second-hand finds. Its name refers to a little dachshund-shaped rest for a butter knife—a domestic detail that captures the project’s playful approach to dining.
An evening at the kitchen’s pace
The current Taxen All-in format brings ten servings with drinks, including wine or an alcohol-free option. There is one sitting per evening, with no drop-in tables. Book through the restaurant’s website; a waiting list is available for fully booked dates. Tables and seats at the bar offer different ways to enjoy the meal, with the bar giving a view of the kitchen at work.
Before booking
The regular indoor restaurant has a minimum age of 16, and bookings accommodate parties of up to six; larger groups can enquire about exclusive hire. Dietary flexibility is limited by the set menu and small kitchen. Lacto-ovo vegetarian and gluten-free alternatives are available, but vegan and lactose-free menus are not. Some ingredients cannot be removed, so read the dietary conditions before committing and email any requirements at least 72 hours ahead.
Smörtaxen suits diners who want to give an entire evening to a shared meal, with the music and company carrying as much weight as what arrives on the plate.
